Why is Polyester Tape The Most Popular Powder Coating Tape?
Polyester tape was created decades ago for use in splicing paper and photo processing. It was discovered to be an excellent choice for powder coat masking. There are a few reasons that polyester tapes are so popular:
1 - Water Resistance
Most powder and e-coating involves the tape mask to be exposed to water. Other base materials like crepe cannot hold up to prolonged exposure or immersion. As polyester is water resistant, it can go through the wash cycle without issue.
2 - Silicone Adhesive
Unlike rubber or acrylic adhesives, silicone can withstand higher heat for longer periods of time. Even if overbaked, silicone will release easily with no residue. This makes it ideal as a high temperature masking tape for powder coating.
3 - Price
There are other tapes with silicone adhesive that withstand 400° F, but they are generally more expensive and are reserved for specialty applications such as circuit board masking, electronics or when temperatures exceed 425°F. Green poly tape has become the go-to masking tape for powder coating and is the most economical choice for disposable masking.
